Open Positions in CADIA

As an active center within Reykjavik University, CADIA employs a number of research and technical staff. This page lists the positions that are currently open for applications, including contact information for each position. Positions in CADIA are awarded based on merit, and we seek candidates with a proven record of excellence. Given that equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence, CADIA welcomes applications from individuals who will further expand its diversity; women and other underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Ph.D. Positions

Applicants are expected to have a finished an MSc degree in computer science or a related field before starting the PhD program, as well as being proficient in English. To apply for a Ph.D. position, submit an application through Reykjavik University's online application system, including:

  • CV
  • Statement of purpose and research interests (1-2 pages)
  • Transcripts from previous university studies
  • An abstract of the candidate's MSc thesis (or equivalent document)
  • Two letters of reference
  • Other documents the applicant deems relevant

We hope to fill the following open Ph.D. positions as soon as possible.

Funded Project: Standardizing the Evaluation of Digital Managers for Better Interactive Experiences

  • Position: Ph.D., funded for 3 years
  • Salary: 4.260.000 ISK per year (conversions: EUR, USD) + benefits (pension, national health insurance)
  • Tuition: Waived
  • Travel Funds: 300.000 ISK per year
  • Teaching: Optional
  • Contact: davidthue@ru.is or stephans@ru.is
  • Deadline: We will begin reviewing applications on March 23, 2018.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies become increasingly integrated with society (e.g., in the form of digital assistants, games, or self-driving cars), it becomes increasingly important to understand how they can ensure that people's experiences meet certain desirable criteria. In Experience Management, researchers and professionals seek to create automated systems called “experience managers”, which work to improve people's experiences in designer-specified ways. Unfortunately, the evaluation and comparison of experience managers is currently impaired by the lack of both a common platform to evaluate them and a common language to describe experience management tasks.

Experience in other fields such as General Game Playing and AI Planning has shown that having a common platform can stimulate and accelerate research progress. The goal of this project is thus to develop a platform for evaluating and comparing arbitrary experience managers on a wide variety of tasks, to accelerate the essential progress of Experience Management research. We plan to do this by studying existing experience managers, developing a common platform that can support them, and promoting the platform to the research community as a tool for their research. Throughout our work, we will draw lessons from the field of General Game Playing, hoping to reuse some of its existing infrastructure and stimulate new exchanges of ideas between the two fields of research.

This project is funded by the Icelandic Research Fund (Rannís).

Funded Project: Character Territoriality - Social Spatial Reasoning for Digital Actors

  • Position: Ph.D., funded for 3 years
  • Salary: 4.260.000 ISK per year (conversions: EUR, USD) + benefits (pension, national health insurance)
  • Tuition: Waived
  • Travel Funds: 300.000 ISK per year
  • Teaching: Optional
  • Contact: hannes@ru.is
  • Deadline: We will begin reviewing applications on March 23, 2018.

We are pushing the boundaries in modeling and synthesis of social character behavior by enriching the state-of-the-art with socio-territorial reasoning and spatial knowledge. Our approach aims to make digital characters more believable as well as deepen our understanding of human social behavior. As characters become more believable, interaction with them becomes more natural and the stories they populate more effective. Fundamental components for character automation include a navigation system and an animation system. While these components may produce natural movement they ignore social interaction, resulting in motion that is out of place when multiple characters occupy a space. We are wrapping these two components in a third one that mimics how people reason about social space. The approach is based on the qualitative representation of space as described by theories of human territories, f-formation and proxemics.

The work builds on our successful platform for reactive social intelligence and specifically addresses outstanding challenges: (1) Territorial Motion Interface, (2) Arbitration of Conflicting Socio-Territorial Movement, (3) Synchronization and Temporal Reasoning and (4) Representing and Reasoning about Context. Our methodology includes iterative design, fast prototyping, and subject evaluations of results.

The work will be done in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, TELECOM ParisTech and Sólfar Studios. The project is funded by the Icelandic Research Fund.

Specialists

We hope to fill the following open positions for Research Specialists as soon as possible.

Speech Synthesis Specialist

Applications are invited for a research position in text to speech systems at the Language and Voice Laboratory (lvl.ru.is) at Reykjavik University's School of Science and Engineering. The position is sponsored by the Icelandic Language Technology fund grant “Environment for building text-to-speech synthesis for Icelandic.” The main aim of the work will be to set up and advance research on speech synthesis back-end architectures for parametric speech synthesis. The successful candidate will work closely with the other members of the lab who focus on the language specific problems such as text normalization, phonemic analysis and phrasing. Even though the main objective of the work will be on Icelandic, working with other languages will be welcome. The successful candidate will contribute to the academic output of the lab as well as the publication of an open TTS environment for Icelandic.
