Garage A.I.

This project focuses on the next software revolution: Artificial intelligence. We want to train a new generation of software engineers to understand the interdisciplinary nature of intelligence and provide them with their first insight into how machines can be made smarter and serve people better.

While most young people have heard about artificial intelligence, they generaly do not understand what it is. The popular media has for the main part failed to convey the positive uses of the technology for improving society and its power to further our understanding of the human mind. The project is designed to make this particular area in particular -- and science and technology in general -- more interesting to young people and raise their awareness of its possibilities.

The project is called "garage A.I." because it aims to give students enough of a background to start tinkering with artificial intelligence in their own garage or back yard. To this end the project encourages participants to use open-source software and simple components salvaged out of old computers, to build interesting systems that are in some way intelligent.
